Medical Air
Medical grade gas mixture, predominantly of nitrogen and oxygen, used for therapeutic treatment in humans and animals
O2 / Ar / N2
Medical Air is a colourless, odourless gas with a molecular weight of 29.0, a boiling point of -194ºC (at 101.325 kPa) and a density of 1.225 kg/m³ (at 15°C and 101.325 kPa). It contains approximately 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and 1% argon with trace amounts of other inert gases, eg xenon, neon, krypton. The nitrogen, argon and trace gases are inert, but the oxygen in air is essential to life for its cellular respiratory function. It is used in a range of clinical situations by doctors, dentists, nurses, veterinarians, anaesthetists, hospitals, day surgeries and so on.
Uses
- A replacement for contaminated atmospheric air
- Respiratory use
- Carrier gas for volatile anaesthetics

CAUTION: Cylinder use in proximity to MRI
Steel cylinders contain a substantial quantity of ferromagnetic material and MUST NOT be used in proximity to MRIs under any circumstances.
When medical gas cylinders are intended for use in a room in which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is being performed, the cylinders and associated equipment must be considered to potentially contain ferromagnetic materials.
Coregas recommends that the standard safety protocols for determining what materials may be brought into proximity with an MRI are applied to all gas cylinders and equipment.
